When we've got the ball, the opposition have to chase.

We wear them down.

Re: Possession football
It was frustrating that we struggled to get through the final defensive line and attack Everton’s goal.
However, there were long periods when we really passed the ball well and kept possession while probing for opportunities and trying to get round or through the defense. I really enjoyed it. As other mentioned our possession play was about attacking which more often then not lead to us losing the ball. It was not just trying to keep the ball and do nothing with it.
I thought we progressed and we lost the ball needlessly less times than in previous games. Also our play from the back was good, Fabianski is too slow to release the ball and that is frustrating at times.
I have to say I love what Moyes and his coaching staff are doing at the moment and long may it continue.

Re: Possession football
Keeping possession for a period of time without probing forward with intent has its value in giving the defence a rest from defending. Any defence in the world will concede if they have to defend for long enough. Plus, there's the old saying that they can't score without the ball. But there's a balance between doing this and just it being plain boring.

I think we have the balance right. Yesterday we kept the ball for a while and then broke their lines and advanced looking to create a chance.

as others have said, it's nice to see we have this and counter attack in our locker.

Re: Possession football
We've scored some great counter attacking goals already this season (Newcastle and Leicester in particular) but can adapt and keep possession when necessary. Plus always a threat at set pieces.... gradually becoming a very rounded team. Great to see.

Re: Possession football
It’s just a matter of adapting to play what’s in front of you, and its great we can do both. Everton clearly only play one way under Benitez, it would be harder not to dominate possession against those tactics. Can’t see the natives accepting that. All well and good when they are winning but when those tight games start going the other way, they will quickly remember his Liverpool past and be on his back.

Possession football is like foreplay without an orgasm at the end of it. It feels good for a bit but is ultimately unsatisfying.

Re: Possession football
I like the fact we are comfortable playing in different ways and the team seems far better drilled to play certain ways vrs certain teams and formations.

The first 15-20 today was a masterclass in how to control a game against a team trying to counter attack. Rice stayed as defensive pivot for most of the first half and he controlled the flow. Of course we didnt create enough up front but the fact we could play this way and control so much possession was great to see.

I also liked how we switched it up in the second half when the game got more stretched, then you saw Rice go into a different role driving from midfield, which I love to see him do.

Also great to see us go to a back three and NOT sit back and defend the lead. Dawson added further stability at the back and we could still break with intent. He is also incredible at corner at both ends of the pitch, he came very close to two at the front post.

Love watching us at the moment, cant remember the last time we were really bossed by a team and we never roll over. First time I can say that in 30 years.

Re: Possession football
For all the possession, we inexplicably seemed to forget that with 4 minutes left, it's far smarter to head towards the corner flag and keep possession or force a deep throw on rather than cut inside and look to get a shot away. The keeper also seemed to make nearly 60 seconds to take a goal kick or throw it out during the bulk of the game, but at the end was kicking or throwing it out quickly.

Bit odd.

Re: Possession football
Possession isn't just about what you do with that possession. Good teams are able to keep the ball, stands to reason that if you have the ball and keep it then you are forcing the opposition to chase it back and therefore they are using up energy.

I know. I said that on the match thread and actually said it last season when teams were starting to sit back against us.

Hats of to Moyes and the boys for adding a second string to their bow. Winning away at an in-form Everton is a seriously good result.

It’s just that I prefer watching fast counterattacking football.

'All that possession and we score from a corner. Hopefully we learn to adjust to be able to respond to the game we are in.'

Possesion that lead to a chance that forced a corner and a subsequent goal that won us the game. That's up there with 'I'm not even left wing'

Re: Possession football
It all depends what you mean by possession football.

What we did today wasn't prioritising keeping possession above risking losing the ball while trying to be creative.

We were merely good at not giving away the ball cheaply. We lost the ball a lot, but not pointlessly. Almost always, we were trying to create.

And we were often successful, at least before the final third. Add the final product, and we're laughing.

Would never of happened against an Everton team that parked the bus today.

It's refreshing to see us being able to keep the ball and look comfortable in possession even playing out from the back.

I love that we can now play two ways. It allows us to in theory have a plan a and a plan b depending on how our opposition and how they set themselves up.

Re: Possession football
I always feel when we win with very poor possession stats it's not a good sign. In my head, I think of exhausted defenders shutting out shot after shot and a single manic sprint of a counter-attack that catches a stiff goalkeeper off guard. Then everyone thinking all is well because we got the three points.

But watching this game today with possession up to 76% during the first half shows just how useless possession is if you can't find the goal.

Re: Possession football
I don't like it as much as Lingard picking the ball up in his own half and screaming down the pitch with Antonio, splitting to the defenders, then calmly slotting it past the keeper.

The fuss people make over possession football is a bit wanky.
